100 Years of Scouting in Boston
Scouting has a proud tradition in the Boston area. While there is some disagreement about exactly which troop was the first founded in the Boston area, Scouting began here in 1910, just weeks after Scouting was brought to the United States from Great Britain.
From the beginning, the ideals of Scouting attracted many young men. They came to learn outdoor skills and to challenge themselves. They enthusiastiacally adopted the Scout Law and really lived the model of good citizenship that the Law still promotes. From the beginning, Scouting was a big success in the Boston area.
Celebrating the Adventure
Continuing the Journey…
With the 100th Anniversary approaching, Boston Minuteman Council wanted to do something special to celebrate.
There are many events which will bring together Scouts locally, nationally, and internationally. Scouts are planting trees, planning an interfaith service and a special Eagle Dinner. Adventure Base 100 will be here in July bringing lots of cool events. We also have a Camporee and a Council-wide service project in the works.
Celebrating 100 Years in a book…
To commemorate our local history, we have published a book (Click Here to Buy the Book). We have many dedicated volunteers who have spent years collecting and catologing photos and Scout memorabilia to help us keep a living history of OUR Scouting. In particular, we would like to thank Fred O’Connell who has been rescuing unwanted shoeboxes and file drawers full of photos, and spent countless hours tracking down photos in historical archives.
Our book, “A Century of Scouting” was published in December, 2009. This book has nearly 200 carefully selected images along with detailed captions which capture our history of Scouting. This is truly a keepsake. The book will have a limited first-run, so buy your copy today!
