Jewish Scouting Programs for 2009 – 2010

The New England Jewish Scouting Committee is pleased to announce the following programs to be held at Temple Reyim, 1860 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02466:

 

 

 

  • Jewish Religious Emblem Award Workshop – Sunday December 20, 2009, 1 to 5 PM
  • Scout Shabbat – Saturday February 6, 2010 9:30 AM to 1 PM
  • Jewish Merit Badge Yeshiva – January 10 and 24, 2010, 2:30 to 6 PM

Details of each of the events are shown below.

Pre-registration for the programs is required. To register for the programs, go on-line to the Boston Minuteman Council web site http://www.doubleknot.com/openrosters/calendar.asp?orgkey=909

Jewish Religious Emblem Award Workshop – Sunday December 20, 2009, 1 to 5 PM

A special workshop for Jewish Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Explorers, Brownies, and Girl Scouts is being held. All Scouts interested in earning their Jewish Scouting Religious emblems (e.g., Maccabee, Aleph, Ner Tamid, Etz Chaim, Lehavah, Bat Or, Menorah, Or Emunah) are welcome to attend.

Scouts will work in small groups with a counselor on the emblem appropriate for their level.

  • Maccabee - Jewish Tiger Cubs and Cub Scouts, grades 1-3
  • Aleph - Jewish Wolf, Bear & Webelos Scouts, grades 4-5
  • Ner Tamid & Etz Chaim for Jewish Boy Scouts and Ventueres
  • Lehavah for Brownie Girl Scouts
  • Bat Or for Junior Girl Scouts
  • Menorah for Cadet Girl Scouts
  • Or Emunah for Senior Girl Scouts
  • Boy Scouts can also earn the Hebrew Interpreter strip

Scouts completing all requirements and submitting completed forms by January 15 will be presented with their award at a special community-wide Scout Shabbat to be held at Temple Reyim, Saturday February 6, 2010.

Scout Shabbat – February 6, 2009 9:30 AM to 1 PM

Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, Venturers, Explorers, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Israeli Scouts, and Scouts from other Countries – young and old, please plan on attending and participating in a special Jewish Scout Shabbat.

Temple Reyim (1860 Washington Street, Newton, MA) is hosting a special Greater Boston Jewish Scout Shabbat on Saturday February 6, 2010 starting at 9:30 AM. The Scout Shabbat Service will consist of special activities in both the main and youth services. Scouts young and old are invited to participate in all aspects of the services.

Scouts (including their families and friends) from all over Greater Boston are invited to attend. All Scouts (young and old) are urged to wear their uniform to the service.

At the Service, Scouts who have earned their Jewish Religious awards (e.g., Maccabee, Aleph, Ner Tamid, and Etz Chaim, Lehavah, Bat Or, Menorah, Or Emunah) will be recognized. To help Scouts prepare for the religious awards, a special workshop will be held in December.

All current Scouts, or adults who were Scouts as youth, are urged to join in this special service. Individuals (Scouts and adults) who would like to participate in the service are welcome to volunteer.

Jewish Merit Badge Yeshiva – Sunday January 10 and 24, 2010 from 2:30 to 6 PM

A special workshop for Jewish Boy Scouts to earn two merit badges is being held.

Scouts must be at least Second Class to participate. Scouts will work in small groups with a counselor on the merit badges.

Class size is limited – 1st come, 1st served.

Scouts can choose two of the following merit badges:

A. First Aid – Session A

B. Citizenship in the World – Session B

C. Law – Session A

D. Coin Collecting – Session B

The afternoon is divided into two class periods of two hours each. Scouts should choose a session A and session B badge

Scouts will be expected to complete work prior to the session and between the two Sunday sessions. Scouts not completing all requirements will be provided with a partial completion that they can finish on their own with a counselor from their local troop.
