Scouts Receive Awards From King of Sweden

On May 9, Boston Minuteman Council honored 21Boy Scouts for service to Scouting, the environment, and public service. Awards were presented by His Majesty, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Robert Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive, Boy Scouts of America at a pancake breakfast at Fan Pier, Boston.

Eagle Scout Michael Browne from Milton received the Environmental Conservation and Stewardship Award of Excellence.  Browne’s project, Get the Lead Out of Fishing, has won numerous national and international awards including the SeaWorld Environmental Excellence Award, the Gloria Barron Prize, first-ever Boy Scout Hero of Conservation Award from Field & Stream magazine, citations from the Massachusetts House and Senate, and is a Do Something Award Finalist for 2009.  Browne and members of Troop 5, Milton, represented the United States at a United Nations Environmental Program, Volvo Adventure, in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2008.  Browne is currently partnering with environmental organizations including the Izaac Walton League to take the project national with a series of public service announcements to raise awareness among fishermen about the dangers of lead fishing weights to our raptors and waterfowl.

Marc Bucchieri, Andrew Fredrick, Zach Kline, and Robbie Brennan from Stoneham;  Raymond Isaacs from Arlington; JR Pellant from Braintree; Aaron Kilroy from Dedham; Joseph Curran from Revere; and Tom Hatvany from Lexington received the award for Excellence in Public Service.  In June 2008, nine Scouts from the Boston area traveled to Utah and partnered with the National Park Service to remove invasive tamarix trees.  Working for one week, the Park Service estimates that these Scouts removed 50 years of invasive growth in the Manti – LaSal National Forest.  These Scouts are members of Arrow Corp 5, Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout honor society. Adult Scout leaders Vittorio Bucchieri from Stoneham and Steve Bosak from Medford accompanied the Scouts on this trip.

Venturer Eagle Scout Marcel Moran and Ranger Venturer Hannah Lyons-Galante, both from Cambridge, received the award for Exceptional Service to Scouting for their work on the annual Merit Badge University.  Merit Badge University provides nearly 400 Scouts from the Boston area and across New England the opportunity to complete merit badges during two weekends at Harvard University.  Scouts earn badges that they might not have the chance to earn with their local Troops.  Moran and Lyons-Galante are both Harvard students and members of Venture Crew 56 in Cambridge.

Eagle Scouts receive Loyalty to Scouting Award

Benjamin Anderson, Dale Armstrong, Jeffery Arscott, Matthew Burke, Matthew Kress, Stuart Leibson, Wendell Myers, William Richardson, and William Scannell received the Loyalty to Fellow Scouts award.  These nine Scouts entered Cub Scouts together and worked to make sure that they could all become Eagle Scouts together.  They received their Eagle rank at a Court of Honor on May 9, the same day they received their Loyalty award.  These Scouts are all members of Troop 1 Islington and Troop 3 Westwood.

 

 

Among the honored guests were His Highness Prince Faisal bin Abdullah bin Mohammed, Education Minister and Chief of Scouting, Saudi Arabia.  His Highness was in Boston to present a $3 million dollar gift to World Scout Foundation’s Gifts for Peace. During the breakfast, local Scouts learned about Scouting all over the world and asked these world leaders about their countries.  After the breakfast, the Scouts talked with a panel of Volvo Ocean Race skippers and crew about life aboard the boats and the rigors of racing around the world.

Nearly 300 Scouts from Boston Minuteman Council and other New England Councils were treated to breakfast on Fan Pier at the Volvo Ocean Race pavilion.  Scouts had an opportunity to talk with His Majesty King Carl XVI and representatives from Boy Scouts of America and World Scout Bureau.

The breakfast was generously provided by Stop and Shop.  Fallon Company, who brought Volvo Ocean Racing to Boston, graciously hosted the event.
